|
CBS, 29 March 07
For many of us, good moods come and go daily but wouldn't it be wonderful if you could feel great and have more energy almost all the Time? One expert says you can and it's easy. When Good Mood dieter Michael Catalano gets home from work, His kids are ready to wrestle. "We would play that game for you know 3 or 4 minutes, and I would just be winded and tired and my energy level would just crash," said Catalano. Always feeling run down puts a damper on Mike's mood too but, he's found a way to boost his sprits and his energy, with food! "Now you know, we can be in there and my wife has to yell at us to come in for dinner because we're in there playing so long," said Catalano. Dr. Susan Kleiner is a nutritionist and author of The Good Mood Diet. She says feeling great starts with feeding your brain the foods it needs to work best. "What you eat can have a very big impact on your mood," said Dr. Kleiner adding "A number of other foods cannot only make you feel better, lift your mood, but different foods can give you better mental energy and focus." So, what should you eat to help keep your disposition sunny and your mind sharp? Kleiner Says start with three servings of dairy a day. "It's high in a very specific amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan raises the feel good neurotransmitter in the brain called serotonin," said Dr. Kleiner. If you suffer from midday energy slumps, try to banish them by eating berries, veggies, and Other high fiber foods that slow digestion and keep blood sugar levels stable. "Whatever carbohydrate and sugar you have in your diet is like time released into the blood stream, and when your blood sugar levels stay even, all day long, you feel better," said Dr. Kleiner. Mike agrees. He's added all Kleiner's feel good foods to his diet, and said he's never going to give them up. "I feel so lousy when I fall off the wagon I can't wait to have that good feeling again, so I want to get back on the wagon," said Catalano. |
