“I really suffer at this time of year because my hands and feet are so cold. In fact it can be so bad that I can literally see my hands turning blue! Can my diet help?” From KT, Surrey

Sharp cold temperatures which are typical at this time of year can cause the blood vessels in the fingers and toes to constrict which temporarily blocks blood flow and causes the painful symptoms you experience. As well as changes in temperature, stress can aggravate these symptoms. Try to avoid temperature extremes such as coming in from the cold exterior and going straight to a blazing fireside. Be careful when handling and even removing frozen items from the freezer and consider wearing gloves and thick woollen or thermal socks to help prevent heat loss.

Diet can help considerably but you’ll need to be consistent and patient! Essential fats found in nuts, seeds and oily fish are really useful because they boost circulation and support blood flow to extremities such as hands and feet. Include seeds either sprinkled on salads and soups or as a handy portable snack to take with you during the day.

Consuming foods which supply protective antioxidants such as fruits and in particular berries may help support the integrity of the blood vessels. Include a daily glass of juice or a smoothie such as the excellent Fruit Hit Black and Blueberry smoothie. Blueberries are particularly valuable because they have been shown to strengthen and protect small blood vessels.
