“I’m getting married in the Spring and I’m worried that I won’t look my best. How can I ensure my hair, skin and nails look great and that I’ve lost those extra winter pounds?” From EW, Hampshire

Congratulations! This is certainly a very exciting time and as you’ll be realising its also potentially the most stressful! Stress depletes the body of important nutrients including the vitamin B complex so make sure you include plenty of whole grains in your diet such as oats, brown rice as well as nuts and seeds. Why not try the munchy seeds as a handy pocket stand-by.

Essential fats which are found in nuts, seeds and oily fish are especially important to maintain lovely glossy hair, healthy nails and good skin. You should aim to include oily fish such as salmon, tuna or trout twice a week and a tablespoon of nuts, seeds or their oils daily. A good way to ensure you reach these levels is to swap butter or margarine for a seed or nut butter, one of our favourites is Pumpkin Seed butter.

If you are carrying one or two extra pounds then focus your diet on low GL foods, these are foods that supply slow release carbohydrates which help keep you fuller for longer as well as reduce cravings. Nairn’s oat cakes are excellent low GL snacks as are their Oat Bakes - replace regular snacks such as crisps and milk chocolate with these low GL options.

Don’t forget that breakfast is an important part of any healthy eating plan and really sets you up for the day. Try a poached or boiled egg or a whole-grain high fibre cereal such as muesli or porridge.

STOP PRESS – The February edition of the BBC Good Food Magazine has voted Pertwood Organics Fruit & Seeds Muesli as their “best buy muesli” out of 27 tested varieties. Don’t miss out and get yours now....
