Divine Chocolate - winners of the Observer best ethical award in 2008
The UK chocolate market is a lucrative one, worth an estimated £3.4 billion. This is no surprise when you consider each of us consume an amazing 10kg of chocolate every year spending an average of £1.33 each week. The real impact of this, however, is only really put in perspective when you consider that the average UK family spends more on chocolate annually than a cocoa farmer earns!
That is why Divine set out to improve the livelihood of these small cocoa producers enabling them to establish their own product in the UK market. As a consequence we saw the very first Fairtrade chocolate bar hit our shelves in 1998.
Divine Chocolate is made with the finest cocoa from farmers in Ghana who co-own the company and achieve a guaranteed income for their product. The chocolate is made with natural cocoa butter and vanilla, lecithin from GM-free soya and contains no vegetable fat substitutes. It has high a cocoa content which means it is a low GL product and is, therefore, less likely to disrupt blood sugar levels.
