Fresh from the festivities of Hogmanay and with Burn's night still to come we're in Scotland this month for the "Meet our Suppliers" feature and who better to help us celebrate than Nairn's Oatcakes Ltd.
Considered the national bread of Scotland, oatcakes have become pseudonymous with the name of Nairn and that's not surprising given their long and established history. John Nairn and his wife Sarah, first opened their village bakery in Strathaven, Lanarkshire in 1896 and despite the original bakery burning down, the family business prospered.
The oats used in Nairn's products are grown in the nearby Scottish Borders without the use of insecticides. Only natural ingredients are used in the production of the Nairn's range with even the palm fruit oil, a natural oil with high levels of vitamin E and no trans fats, being sourced from a sustainable producer. Nairn's are no strangers to food awards with their sweet oat biscuits, which are free of hydrogenated fat and have less sugar and more fibre than other "healthy" biscuits, being past winners of the much acclaimed Great Taste Awards.
If you're yet to try the Nairn's range then take a look at the new oatcake, cracker and biscuit selection which includes six separately wrapped varieties including cheese oatcakes, fine milled oatcakes, wholegrain pumpkin & sunflower seed crackers, stem ginger oat biscuits, rough oatcakes and wholemeal bran crackers. Having enjoyed these over Christmas the Mood Food team think they make the ideal finale to your traditional Burn's night supper just add a good quality cheese such as Lanark Blue.
